Cholesterol testing
Patients must be fasting for a cholesterol blood test. This means no eating or drinking for at least 8 hours prior to the test. Water is permitted. It is advisable to do the blood test early in the morning. Pathology labs in Geraldton open at 7.30 am.
Stomach ulcer bacteria test
This test gives information about the presence of the helicobacter pylori bacteria in the stomach. This organism is responsible for upper abdominal discomfort, gastritis and ulcers. A breath sample is collected 30 minutes after swallowing a tablet.
Patients should be fasting for 4 hours and should not take certain stomach medications.
Testing for diabetes
Blood sugar levels are tested one and two hours after drinking a sweet drink. Patients must be fasting. No food, drinks or energy supplying substances in any form should be consumed for at least 8 hours prior to the test. Water is permitted throughout the fasting period and during the test. Patient should avoid excessive exercise during the fasting period. The test can tell if someone has diabetes mellitus or not.
